Can’t Get Out of Your Own Way? Self-Delegation Like You’re Your Own Boss
When I first started running my business, I thought productivity meant juggling everything at once. The problem? I’d stall out, not because I didn’t care, but because I hadn’t given myself clear roles. I was the CEO, the assistant, the creative, the project manager — all blurred together. It left me stuck, second-guessing, and wasting time.
What helped me move forward was learning to self-delegate. Instead of just writing “finish project” on a list, I’d break it down and assign myself roles like I was two people working together. For example:
Manager me sets the priorities.
Worker me just follows the directions.
That small mental shift made it easier to show up without overthinking.
Scenario: Content Creation
When I make content, Manager Me lays it out like this:
Decide the topic (Manager).
Write the draft copy (Worker).
Design the graphics or carousel (Worker).
Schedule it in my planner (Manager).
Upload + publish (Worker).
Instead of sitting down to “make content” (which feels massive), I’m just following instructions I already gave myself.
Here’s how you can try it:
Write your task list as if you’re delegating to someone else. Be specific: “Draft the first email” instead of “work on email campaign.”
Decide who’s in charge. Manager you doesn’t have to show up every day — just once, when setting the plan.
When it’s time to work, switch hats. Let worker you simply execute without re-negotiating the plan.
It feels strange at first, but treating yourself like a teammate cuts through procrastination. You don’t have to figure everything out in the moment — just trust the version of you that already made the call.
